My parents named me Patricia Denise but then started calling me Denny and didn’t want me to go by a nickname of my middle name so changed my name to Denise Ellen. I have always been called Denny by my family and close friends and have never really bonded to “Denise.” Doesn’t seem like it fits me. But Denny does.

I read your story,& that was sweet “sweet as bear meat”, that’s a compliment I’m an African American man, so it’s a black folks thang, anyway my wife of 43 years just passed,”I like to say she graduated” her name’s Denise I plan to purchase a guitar from Sweetwater on the 3rd of May and find someone to engrave her nick name “Nees’e” on the top face along the curve behind the strap pin,thankx for your story.

I forgot this information (duh): Yes, tired of Deniece/ Denephew joke. My parents nicknamed me Prissy. I don’t like any nickname for Denise, especially Dee or DeeDee. But you can call me D. (I know that’s like Rainbow Johnson’s (Blackish) last name change argument because she married Andre Johnson.) But still… Several times, people have thought I’ve said my name is Janine as well. I’ve been called Debbie more times than I’d like to count. So, I’ve hated being called some other name more than any derivative of Denise, but most people don’t change my name.

I’m named after my dad, Dennis, so I’ve always loved my name even though most girls I knew that were named Denise were African American. I actually have a couple of friends named Denise. It was weird at first to call someone else by my pretty rare name, but I got used to it. I’ve been called Neesie by a couple of close friends, but nothing derogatory or demeaning. I’m fortunate, I was never bullied as a kid. My middle name is Diane, so my Spanish name was Diana. One teacher told me my Spanish name was Dionicia, but it just never stuck. I was Diana for so many years that that’s what I’m familiar hearing. My name in Koean is DeeNeeSoo. When I saw the city name, Denison, TX, I knew that would be my son’s name since he would be named after me and not Dennis, but I never had any children.

I always liked my name because it’s not too common. Only annoyance is that ridiculous deniece or denephew joke. People usually call me Dee or DeeDee.

Have always hated my name and all the nicknames. Dizzy Denise. Duhduhduhnise. Neezer, DeeDee, D-nephew. On and on. And nobody ever, ever gets it right on the phone. I always give my husband’s name for take out even if he’s not with me (Matt). The whole reason I ended up here was looking for ideas for nicknames because I got called Jenine a few days ago.

In reply to Denise Peta. My mom named my Denise and I have hated it my whole life. At 40 I changed it. Your name can literally be whatever you want it to be. I didn’t officially change it, I just started introducing myself by my chosen name and told my friends I was changing. My family and friends were totally supportive of it and all made the change in what they called me. Go for it.

I have always hated my name, I’m 50 and cringe whenever I hear it. I go by Dee. One of the most embarrassing things I was called was in yr 6 after a school dance, my mother came to pick me up and in front of everyone, called me Neesee (I had never been called that before). I got teased mercilessly for that. Also hate Denise the menise (like dennis the menace). Wonder if it’s too late to just change it…
